The Monkey's 10 Best.... Ranked
The Arctic Monkeys are heading to Australia for Falls Festival and Lost Paradise and The Music is helping you get match-fit with this countdown of the ten Arctic Monkeys bangers you need to know.
#10 - Four Out Of Five (2018)
The lead single from the Monkey's last record 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino' had some channeling of Bowie and a lavish video. A worthy entrant into the Arctic Monkey's cannon, this one nonetheness polarised some fans looking for more straight indie-pop. Don't worry. We've got you covered too.
#9 - R U Mine? (2012)
The world's first taste of the band's mega A.M. record, this one signaled what fans were in for on what would go on to become the bands second biggest record. A top 40 entry for them in Hottest 100, this one was possibly overshadowed by two other mega hits on the same record that we'll get to soon....
#8 - Crying Lightning (2009)
Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter
The first single from the band's often overlooked 'Humbug' album, this one came complete with the epic video and was the band's sixth highest ARIA charting single here in Australia (so far).
#7 - Brianstorm (2007)
Frenetic, exciting and a reminder that there was plenty more in the tank, The Arctic Monkeys gave the first taste of their second record 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' as they continued their march past their world-beating debut into impressive and confident sophomore territory.
#6 - Don't Sit Down Cause I've Moved Your Chair (2011)
The lead single from 2011's 'Suck It And See', this one was another hottest 100 entry for the band from what was their worst performing record both in the UK and here in Australia. That aside, this one was another stone cold banger. They needn't have worried anyway, because AM was just around the corner.
#5 - Flourescent Adolescent (2007)
When a band has as big a debut as the Arctic Monkeys did, there's always a question over whether they can follow it up when the horizon is littered with 'the next big thing' indie bands, but 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' proved the Arctic Monkeys had staying power when Brianstorm dropped, but this second single from the record was even bigger again, hitting the Hottest 100 top 50 and cementing them into being one of the biggest bands of the decade.
#4 - When The Sun Goes Down (2006)
After their debut single wiped the floor of global charts, all eyes were on the band's debut 'Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not' and the band did not disappoint, scoring another double platinum #1 in the UK and a #30 in Hottest 100, a position they wouldn't better for seven years.
#3 - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High (2013)
Another smash from their unstoppable 'AM' album, Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High was a Hottest 100 #6 with an incredible video. Their best? Yeah we'll make that call.
#2 - Do I Wanna Know (2013)
A massive hit across the world including 3x platinum in the UK (matching their debut) and platinum in Australia (beating it), this is peak Arctic Monkeys. Hitting #3 in Hottest 100 (in the same year as Why'd You Only Call me took out #6) there's no question that this song cemented the band in history.
#1 - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor (2015)
Yeah ok so it's the obvious one, but that's what these lists are about. The reality is that the world was enamoured with this three minute dittie from the opening bars of what is one of the now most iconic riffs in rock. The video starts with Alex Turner saying "don't believe the hype" and it's true that there was a large slice of the rock world waiting to write this one off as another 'Song About Ping Pong' or 'Pumped Up Kicks' that explode and fade. Here in Australia it was a huge hit smashing into the ARIA top 20 (a feat the band haven't managed since) but only managed #52 in Hottest 100. The songs stature only grew over the years however, finding a place in 2013s 'Hottest 100 of the Last 20 Years'. Is the band's most iconic song their best? Let the debate begin.
