What is your store called?

The Mosh Pit

Where are you located?

317 Main Road Cardiff and online here.

Do you cater for a specific niche or genre?

We only sell pre loved music. Records, CDs, Tapes, DVDs and Books. Rarely do we buy new stock.  We don’t focus on any specific genre but we have a lot of Metal albums on record and CD. We’ll look at almost any genre that walks through the door.

Tell us about the people behind the scenes?

It’s me, Kellie, I own the shop and Paul. Paul owned a record store in Newcastle in the 90s called The Daisy Chain so he’s the perfect person to work here. Everyone knows him and he must be protected at all costs. I’m just a moll with bright hair who loves music and collecting.

When and why did the store open?

The shop opened in 2012. I had an art studio here in Cardiff where I made things from old records. People started dropping in thinking it was a record shop and over time it just morphed into one!

What do your customers most know you for?

The curated chaos of the store. From a massive amount of cassettes to a fantastic metal collection. A wall of styli for every different type of stereo and a record flattening service. Everyone is welcome. We don’t care who you listen too as long as you’re listening to something. I can’t stand music snobs and have kicked a few out. Picking on someone because they like something you don’t is boring and bland.

What is the most popular title you stock at the moment?

I don’t sell new records so can’t really say.

What is the most popular evergreen title?

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. I don’t think there’s a week where we don’t have it in stock sell it or aren’t asked for it.

What is the best thing about running a record store in 2025?

Well, it’s a great way to spend the day! Listening to music and buying music. The excitement of what may come through the door today is always fun. Talking to people about what they love about music, why they love it. Learning about new music and artists and discovering old music I wasn’t ready for before now. Having a chat with regulars and helping kids discover music and records. Also, the rock star hours are fantastic. Loving what you do for a living is the best job in the world!

What is the hardest thing about running a record store in 2025?

Keeping people coming through the doors when they could spend their money on so many other things. Going through phases of not wanting to listen to music at home because I’m enjoying the silence. Finding something new to pay in the shop every single day. There’s just so much to choose from it becomes overwhelming. I usually hand it over to a customer to choose.
