Album Review: Waza - Love Is A Battlefield

Evoking a surreal languidness, this mixtape comprises breezy, instrumental hip hop with soft, jazzy hints. It emanates a wistfully cinematic quality, exacerbated by its heavy incorporation of samples in the style of The Avalanches. These are generally fuzzy snippets from classic Hollywood films with romantic themes. The inclusion of three short interludes and Act 4's dreamy sample of Clair De Lune adds to this hazy recollection of bygone eras. Waza effectively merges old-time nostalgia with a contemporary approach to genre and 'found art'. This extends to his retro sample of The Cars' Drive, which still works within the context.
