Live Review: The Preatures, Bad//Dreems

Still riding high off the back of last weekend’s performance at Splendour In The Grass, Sydney outfit The Preatures headed to a packed Fowlers Live for the fourth leg of their Two Tone Melody tour.

Local lads, Bad//Dreems kicked off proceedings with a stellar set to get their hometown crowd warmed up. The disheveled appearance of the band, teamed with clever songcraft and catchy guitar riffs made for a live set perfect to set the tone for any night. The boys tore through a set including old favourites such as the very fitting Chills, and some newer tracks like Dumb Ideas and high energy ender, Hoping For.

In the break between bands, coats were slowly coming off and every punter was warm, limbered up and ready for The Preatures. The suave five-piece opened a killer set with the first single from their forthcoming debut LP and tour namesake, Two Tone Melody. Guys and girls all over the room were swooning over main man Gideon Bensen and leading lady Isabella Manfredi, think something like Joan Jett meets Danny Zuko. With their effortlessly cool demeanour, commanding stage presence and incredibly catchy songs, The Preatures delivered a polished set that has to be seen live to be truly appreciated. As well as belting out tunes from the Is This How You Feel? EP, the band took on a cover of The Angels’ Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, and they certainly came through with the goods.

The band concluded their set with crowd favourites Is This How You Feel? and an incredible encore of the song that started it all for the band, Take A Card. It’s easy to see why The Preatures can sell out national tours, win the Vanda & Young songwriting competition and pull a top ten spot in triple j’s Hottest 100. The band has worked incredibly hard over the course of the past year and, well, it’s paid off. As the night drew to a close, the punters happily filed out, snagging merch on the way and anticipating the release of the forthcoming album. With a reach spanning across all ages and lifestyles, The Preatures are steadily cementing their name in Australian music, and are definitely set for much bigger things upon the release of their debut album.
