Recently signed to Universal Music, she has all the signs of becoming a star with her buttery voice, confident swagger and well crafted tunes. On a wet Sydney evening, the sounds of Dustin Tebbutt are suitably mellow. Slow swaying and chatter are noticeable within the crowd as Tebbutt and band play chilled tunes from his two EP releases. While the songs aren’t enough to really make you take notice, there’s a sweetness to them and the mountainous background imagery is enough to put us into a hypnotic state.
The geek chic look was in tonight as Danny Harley, uniquely coined as The Kite String Tangle, took to the stage to rapturous applause from the sold out Metro audience. Surrounded by vertical lights and electronic paraphernalia, Harley moved slickly between keyboard clicking, volume sliding and electric drumming while singing through his small catalogue of songs that have spread like wildfire over the last two years. His breakthrough song, Given The Chance, still feels fresh and his voice on Words is reminiscent of Icelandic superstar, Ásgeir.
A re-appearance from JOY. on Stone Cold was a masterstroke, their voices melding together seamlessly. Harley performed a solid cover of his touring partner, Tebbutt’s The Breach, before inviting the man himself to the stage for a two-song finale, including their joint effort, Illuminate. There’s a collaborative feel to the evening and as the final electronic notes lingered in the air, the crowd floated out onto George Street. Not a bad way to spend a Thursday evening.
