The burgeoning “Disco Queen” tag is well deserved.
It’s been years since John “The Juan” MacLean has stepped out of his bigger DFA brother James Murphy’s shadow. Maclean has maintained the same irrepressible style of the DFA roster in general. In A Dream’s packed with swirling shoegaze-disco beats and the sense of ennui you get from watching a John Howard film. It works.
It’s not all the same: A Place Called Space almost one-ups Kavinsky in retro-electro territory; Here I Am is a ‘90s R&B pumper. Nancy Whang makes this album, though: the burgeoning “Disco Queen” tag is well deserved.
