Album Review: Stimulator Jones - Exotic Worlds & Masterful Treasures

27 April 2018 | 12:00 pm | Guido Farnell

"Slinky beats that are best suited to laid-back dancefloors."

Stimulator Jones' debut album doesn't offer up more of the same hip hop that we have come to expect from Stones Throw Records.

Jones writes, performs and produces this sweet collection of '80s-styled slow jams. Primarily comprised of love songs, Jones works sultry vibes and chilled moods that aim to seduce. While clearly signalling Jones' intent, songs like Need Your Body are as smooth and soft as silk and offer a cruisy, feelgood time.

Jones' soulful jams are best when he works restrained disco grooves such as Feel Your Arms Around Me, which come with slinky beats that are best suited to laid-back dancefloors. Jones fluidly flips between soul, R&B and funk with just a little hip hop thrown in for good measure. While Jones plays a bunch of instruments on this record he has given many of these tunes a retro '90s, scratchy sampled feel. Much of the focus of the mix is on drums and bass, which gives this album a really fat bottom end. Delicately cooing sweet nothings on these songs, Jones is a sweet romancer.

Exotic Worlds & Masterful Treasures oozes like thick, sweet treacle.
