There's something about New Zealand waters that make its inhabitants predisposed to creating infectious, carefree pop. It's comforting to know that since the days of Flying Nun records in the 90s, the spirit is not waning. A spirit that is ever present in Pikachunes latest wordy track 'Writer's Block'.
Hailing from Wellington, Pikachunes is one of NZ's brightest stars, who's been carving out a name for himself through scattered releases since 2009. Real name Miles McDougall, his music is the result of what happens to the musically gifted after they listen to too much Eurythmics and Pet Shop Boys.
His music under Pikachunes seems to follow the same rederick - one of two synths feature with an analogue bass line, all tied together with a funky, disco-laden beat. It's a winning combination which makes itself heard on his latest track.
'Writers Block' is the kind of satirical word play favoured by britpop masteros like Jarvis Cocker. Against frenzied 80s beats, Pickachunes whimsically stretches his vocabulary to the limit.
As he told Under The Radar NZ, he wrote the song to "try and impress a girl who was way out of my league. She held an equal love for the English language and I thought by flexing my lyrical muscles I may win her over, which funnily enough worked".
With lines like "We can't be in love if you can't put into words" this song is certain to get the world noticing the musically and linguistically talented Pickachunes.
