Live Review: Oliver Tank, Batts, Giverny

"You never knew whether you'd be closing your eyes and spacing out or head bopping along to a surprisingly danceable track."

Giverny gave a solid performance - putting together a solo set that ambitiously set out to encompass an electronic whirlwind of noise. The early attendees got to witness his clear dexterity on the guitar and his deep harmonious vocals on the mic.

Up next was British Import Batts who - armed with just a ringing guitar and hauntingly infectious vocals - won the attention of the crowd with her incredibly powerful and personal songwriting. The Melbourne-based artist had the kind of comfortable stage presence that made us all feel like her mates instantly. The feeling was mutual as she sung Lie To Me, which she revealed to be a song, "about being lied to by a bad person... wanker," she added, smirking. Anyone she hadn't won over by this point couldn't not be on her side now. Batts left her best until last as she finished up with her latest single For Now.

It's only the second stop on his tour showcasing his debut album OT, and chill music maestro Oliver Tank already has his set absolutely nailed. Spacey synth lines lingered in the air but the grooves kept coming as he kicked off by mashing up The Beatles' Blackbird and his own track Last Night I Heard Everything In Slow Motion. This set the tone perfectly as Tank continued to keep things calm but fun with his signature blend of relaxing pop music and soothing reverb vocals going into Help You Breathe.

What helped to elevate the basement producer's live show was his combination of an electric guitar - used to play silky smooth licks - while also adding thick electronic bass lines to keep punters boogieing. The boogie reached its peak at the finale of his set when Tank unleashed Snoop Dogg's Drop It Like It's Hot, with his own guitar chords ringing over the top. What made the Sydney artist's set so special was the unexpected turn he took with every song transition - you never knew whether you'd be closing your eyes and spacing out or head bopping along to a surprisingly danceable track. Either way, it was a hell of an enjoyable ride.
