Meg MacFirst focus is rightly that voice – as one so young channels her obviously old soul into some Old Soul. Example: that knowing take on Bill Withers’ standard, Grandma’s Hands. Then note the beds of programmed drums cradling her emotions, adding a 21st century edge. Her own sometimes spectacular songs also show knowledge, both of the music she’s a product of, and herself. In Turning she ‘saw everything’, then becomes the woman scorned in Every Lie, the quietly martial beat suggesting she won’t get fooled again. Maybe. There’s humanity, honesty and soul here. The Mac girl’s a bit special.
