Fresh Finds: Class Of 2025 – Aussie Acts To Add To Your Playlist

Live Review: Tkay Maidza offers a slinky, subdued moment with 'Big Things'

Tkay Maidza's vocal gymnastics have always been impressive, but never more so than on this EP and its opening track 'Big Things.'

Today, Aussie rap wunderkind TKAY MAIDZA has dropped her Last Year Was Weird Vol. 1 EP, and it looks like this year might be glorious.

Consistently since her debut five years ago, Tkay Maidza has always switched it up. Her ability to go from a smooth, floating pop vocal to a hurricane of spitfire raps in a second is near unmatched, and she sounds perfectly at home on any type of production. Her vocal gymnastics have always been impressive, but never more so than on this EP and its opening track 'Big Things.'

Coming hot off the lead single, the ferocious 'Flexin', 'Big Things' is a stark but refreshing difference in pace. Maidza told Sydney Morning Herald that writing this song signalled a cleanse for her after a, well, weird 2016. And after just one play through, you can hear almost instantly how much of a different place Maidza is in.

While usually her home is among bombastic, technicolour production, 'Big Things' is a track where every little element finds its way into the spotlight. A subdued, reggae-inspired number that breezes along about the all-too-real fleeting nature of life, we're seeing a vulnerable Tkay as opposed to the fiery confidence we saw in 'Flexin'. Add in the fact that Maidza's father is on the bass here, and 'Big Things' feels like a perfect snapshot of where Tkay is at this very moment. And we love it.

She's done a sonic hairpin turn, taken us down yet another unexpected route and, as always, Tkay Maidza absolutely nails it.
