The complex layering of synths, beats and sounds in SPACE ABOVE’s ‘This is It’ gives the track a wistful and otherworldly vibe. Combine that with the reflective, almost Bowie-esque vocals and you have a winner.

‘This is It’ is the second original track to come from this mysterious New Zealand outfit so far. Full of luscious textures, muted beats and ethereal synths, it is not hard to see why they are labelled as ‘space tech’. They have succeeded in creating a unique sound and atmosphere, which gives promise of things to come. The production is smooth, the layering is seamless, the vocals dreamy and light, all of which comes together to create an effortless flow of sound. It’s like a sonic massage.

Their first single release, ‘Hold On’, has a similar spatial ambience about it, but refrains from going into too far into synth-pop territory. ‘This is It’ is a bit more forward in that regard. After a warm and slow build up, the true glory of this track is realised about three and a half minutes in when the song lets go and becomes irresistibly dancey and upbeat, before finally coming down for a nice, smooth ending.
