Lenny KravitzAs a vocalist, Kravitz is starting to show his age. As a guitarist, he’s an average, Hendrix-worshipping session player. But as a songwriter and — oddly enough — a bass player, he’s simply sublime. On what seems to be his ode to ‘80s pop and ‘70s funk, Kravitz isn’t breaking any new ground; his music is poppy and catchy if a bit pedestrian. Essentially, the album is functionally good with a few moments that border on ingenious. At 50, Kravitz is about where you’d expect musically: he probably won’t spark too many flames, but won’t put them out, either.
