Live Review: Josh Pyke, Banff

To commence the last night of Josh Pyke's tour in promotion of his latest album But For All These Shrinking Hearts was Brisbane solo act Banff, also known as Benjamin Forbes. This indie-pop-rock outfit performed admirably at the Astor Theatre. Nervous but entertaining, Banff started the night off well, resembling a mash-up of bands Death Cab For Cutie and Boy & Bear. With some raw harmonies and exceptional musical talent, Forbes and his band were able to silence the entire theatre.

At times there were some faults with iffy notes and the questionable choice of playing to a backing track, however, the group were able to pull it off in the end. Forbes was able to interact with the crowd well and lyrically was flawless.

Astor Theatre is the perfect arena for anybody wanting a comfortable gig experience with the ability to fully appreciate the sounds of live music. A perfect venue for Banff, as guests were able to absorb every portion of the band both individually and together. With a voice interesting enough to silence a crowd alongside an astonishing live band, Banff is definitely one to watch.

With a short break between acts more people trickled into Astor Theatre, nearly filling the place completely. It wasn't long after the crowd had settled that the much anticipated Josh Pyke came on stage.

Pyke and his band were almost too perfect as they laid down a few tracks from 2015 album, But For All These Shrinking Hearts. If you closed your eyes it was near impossible to tell whether you were listening to the record or the real thing.

Pyke continued the night, stopping in between songs to amuse the audience with his own hilarious thoughts and stories. Asides from being an extraordinary musician Pyke is a humorous man. Some banter between Pyke and the audience resulted in the night revolving around the phrase, "Keep it real, Pyke!" And indeed, like promised, Josh Pyke kept it real. Playing the crowd favourites like the The Lighthouse Song and Middle Of The Hill, and leaving with no encore, he left the audience in awe till the end.
