Job For A CowboyJob For A Cowboy have, in the past, had sections of their career defined by a lack of respect from the larger metal community. Whether it was the early pig squeal craze or the deathcore elements, traditional metal heads seemed to shun the band despite some impressive showings. New album ‘Sun Eater’ marks the culmination of a shift to a sole death metal sound.
From opening track, ‘Eating The Visions Of God,’ previous notions of Job For A Cowboy's style and any disappointing expectations are thrown right out the window. While the song follows a slower route than the band's previous material, the technicality that is put into the drumming and guitar riffs makes it some signature metal.
Single ‘Sun of Nihility’ shows their sharp guitar work and encompasses moments that are nothing short of dynamic and equally skilful. It shows extreme music can have a considered pulse.
‘The Celestial Antidote’ marks one of the heaviest tracks on the album, yet unlike JFAC's previous work, this track highlights the instrumental technicality and focuses on a higher production. The vocals get really aggressive but one of the notable highlights is the drumming, Danny Walker simply sounds like he was born to do death metal.
Ending on a more doom influenced note with ‘Worming Nightfall’, which while falling a little out of place with the rest of the album, as a stand alone track it works rather well. Job For A Cowboy have really stepped up their game and shown their musical potential with 'Sun Eater'.
‘Sun Eater’ sees Job For A Cowboy definitively say goodbye to their deathcore roots and deliver a consistent and imposing death metal album that stands out. With its excellent guitar work and layered grooves that all are presented with a continuity they have lacked in the past, these guys have finally found a sound they can master.
