Expect to hear The Late Blue on high rotation on sunny summer afternoons.
Melbourne outfit Gypsy & The Cat are going from strength to strength. Following their well-received debut album Gilgamesh, their upcoming release The Late Blue picks up where the former left off with some really interesting and chilled-out tracks.
Opener Early In December proves right off the bat that this duo haven't lost their experimental edge. There's a lot going on instrumentally, yet it sounds effortless and flows beautifully into second track Bloom. Bloom is exciting to listen to. It's got a fantastic beat, and should undoubtedly score a spot on everyone's summer playlists. Title track The Late Blue has a bit of a Beach Boys thing going on. Reminiscent of the '70s, it's unpretentious and really easy to appreciate with its soothing melody and peaking chorus. Sorry was the first track released from this album, and it's not hard to hear why they chose this particular song. Complete with a sweet-sounding chorus that's damn near impossible not to sing along to, it's the perfect teaser for what these guys have to offer second time around. Zombie World is another standout; right from the get-go feet are tapping and heads are nodding – this one could definitely become a bit of dancefloor favourite.
There are some really exceptional tracks on this album, but more importantly, not a bad one in the bunch. That's probably the best thing about The Late Blue; each song has a place and a purpose on this album, no two of the ten tracks sound the same and they fit together so harmoniously. Expect to hear The Late Blue on high rotation on sunny summer afternoons.
