FOREIGN/NATIONAL are a psych-pop group from Melbourne, best known for their low-key, lounge approach to the usually so chaotic genre. They’re readying their debut EP, but for now, they’ve teased us with a taste of what to expect.
Stripping it right back to its feel-good roots, their latest single ‘Life Tourist’ is like a hot, sunny day sent straight from the middle of a holiday. Jazzy chords, dissonant piano keys dotted with disarraying splays of distorted sounds and warm, step-taking tones make up the essential gist of the track, but it is still much more than that.
It is also the lilting tone wallowing around in the vocals that make this drone-laced sound eventuate to this crisp, clear-cut track that encompasses everything that you never thought would fit together. But it somehow does, and it feels more refreshing than ever.
