‘Cut Your Hair’ was PAVEMENT’s first (and arguably only) foray into the mainstream music sphere. It comes from their 1994 sophomore album, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. The album was a triumphant follow-up to the widely adored, Slanted & Enchanted (hey, guess who’s listening to that on vinyl now?).
Now Pavement haven’t actually released any full LPs for over 10 years- although they did have a reunion tour back in ’10 (that I missed because I had exams and about which I’m still glowering). I’m still holding out for a new release because hey, it’s a good time to be young and idealistic, and this band epitomised the rise of alternative/indie rock in the ‘90s, following the continuing success of The Pixies. The band, however assure us that they don’t have any such intention. Bummer.
Without these guys, I’d still be listening to Aqua, and probably sobbing because Aqua just don’t get me. But Pavement understands me. The grimy vocals of Stephen Malkmus, plus the twang and noise and everything combine and make this into a catchy indie tune.
Did you know that this video was aired on an episode of Beavis and Butthead and declared “buttwipe music”? Well now you do. Look, he sneezes cats! The internet love cats!
