Observing the stylistic variation and prolific nature of Brad Mehldau's 20-odd-year musical career, his latest release is not at all expected. A far cry away from the delightful works of contemporary jazz on acoustic piano, which is more familiar territory, Mehliana: Taming The Dragon, is a chaotic melting pot of drums, beat machines and synthesisers used in incredibly humbling and expert ways, and though unexpected, entirely thrilling to listen to.
