Melbourne's third White Night event returns to shed the spotlight on culture in the city this coming February, with the precinct-spanning evening of entertainment revealing its massive program of local, national and international artists and works today.
Running for twelve hours, from 7pm on Saturday, February 21, to 7am on Sunday, February 22, White Night Melbourne will take over nine city precincts, from Southbank Boulevard in the south to Victoria Street in the north, and encompass cultural institutions, public spaces, gardens, landmarks and laneways, with bursts of activity on the Yarra River and in Alexandra Gardens — plus a new precinct specifically created for the event, around Melbourne Museum.
Importantly, the music program isn't forgotten amid all the expansion for 2015 — next year's event will see three all-night music stages throughout the White Night area, showcasing everything from indie to jazz and world music. There's room for buskers — Bourke Street Mall and the Southbank Promenade host the Buskers' Pitches — and even classical fans are catered for, with Toccata, at St Paul's Cathedral, cranking the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach for twelve hours straight. Punters can also make the music themselves, with installations such as The Beat Box, by The NPOWA Musical Collective, giving attendees the chance to tinker with myriad toys and accessories to create unique aural performance pieces.
White Night hasn't yet opened up about exactly who will be gracing the likes of the Indie Music or World Music stages, but with a diversity of genres and sounds being spotlit, there's almost guaranteed to be a little bit of something for everyone.
