Covering a classic is no easy task, especially when it’s one with an already epic vocal performance. But that didn’t scare off Vera Blue, who took on Radiohead’s timeless single, Creep, for triple j’s Like A Version.

Stripping the song back to just three elements: an electric guitar, a piano, and vocals, Vera Blue brought her signature flair to Creep. Starting in the lower range of her voice, the song unfurled by the chorus thanks to her stunning falsetto.

The second verse is where Blue truly shines, breaking hearts when she sings “I want you to notice when I’m not around.”

She delivers when the song calls for full chest voice, and when you least expect it, pulls out The Pipe, a mouth-controlled dynamic FX processor and synthesiser designed by the synthesiser company, SOMA Laboratory.

Discussing the song choice, Blue explained that while Creep is an “epic rock song,” its lyrics are also “heartbreaking.” So, she wanted to perform a “very haunting version” that still nods to the original.

Blue described Creep as “relatable” and channelled those emotions – the feeling of something you can’t have, aiming to pull the raw emotion from Thom Yorke’s original performance.

While she was in the triple j studio, Vera Blue performed the song Maze from her forthcoming album, Modern Rituals. You can check out her performances below.

Modern Rituals is scheduled for release on Friday, 21 August, via Island Records/Universal Music Australia. Blue is also touring in support of the album soon.
