This year’s Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympics have been filled with surprises, with Celine Dion making an epic comeback, Gojira being the first metal band to ever perform at the Olympics, and now, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig making a surprise appearance during Phoenix’s set.

It was heavily rumoured last week that French bands Phoenix and Air would perform at the 2024 Olympic Games. That was correct.

However, French musician and producer Kavinsky and Belgian pop star Angèle also appeared. Later in the ceremony, the reported appearances of Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Snoop Dogg also went ahead.

Phoenix began their set with Lisztomania before launching into Nightcall with Kavinsky and Angèle (the former’s hit). They then appeared with Air for Playground Love and brought out Ezra Koenig for a performance of their collaboration, Tonight.

Phoenix wrapped up their set with a rousing performance of 1901, which NME reports saw frontman Thomas Mars jump into the crowd of Olympians before being hoisted into the air.

Kicking off the ceremonial handoff to the next city to host the Olympic Games – Los Angeles in 2028 – H.E.R. performed the Star Spangled Banner at the Stade de France before the camera cut to Tom Cruise performing stunts inside the stadium (per Pitchfork).

Then came more performances, with Red Hot Chili Peppers performing Can’t Stop in front of a crowd at a Los Angeles beach, Billie Eilish and Finneas performing Birds Of A Feather (from her latest album, Hit Me Hard And Soft), and Snoop Dogg—also the successful on-ground Olympics correspondent for NBC Sports—performing Drop It Like It’s Hot and The Next Episode, joined by Dr. Dre on the latter track.

There isn’t too much footage online yet, but you can watch some snippets of the performances below and check out the Closing Ceremony in its entirety on 9 Now and Stan Sports.

Taking to Instagram after the Opening Ceremony took place on 26 July, Gojira wrote:
