This re-do of 'Daemon Vulgaris' shows how far Venom Prison have come over the last five years.
'Daemon Vulgaris' was originally the brutal, ugly second song off the group's sophomore EP, 'The Primal Chaos' (2015), and now it's apart of an upcoming re-made compilation album from the U.K. death metal act, 'Primeval,' out October 9th. This record will also feature two brand new songs - 'Defiant to the Will of God' and 'Slayer of Holofernes' - and it's those two newbies from Venom Prison that I'm far more interested to sink my teeth into.
That isn't to say that this tighter, fresher-sounding, 'Daemon Vulgaris' isn't bad or anything of the sort. It's the kind of blood-letting, misanthropic Venom Prison that we all know and (hopefully) love, sitting in line with the raw feelings and riff-driven death metal songwriting of last year's solid 'Samsara' LP. It's not my favourite cut from the band by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll never say no to new Venom Prison, re-recording or otherwise.
Much like their 2020 redux version of the divebomb-laden 'Defy The Tyrant,' and with far cleaner production and Larissa Stupar giving one of her best vocal performances yet, this newest re-recording of a five-year-old Venom Prison cut shows just how far the vocalist and the band as a whole have come. It's an interesting comparison between where they were five years ago as a fledgling underground extreme act, to now a more popular death metal outfit that's making this genre feel exciting again.
