Seminal British electronic duo Underworld have cancelled their upcoming Australian festival appearances.

Due to return to the country this month after a huge tour in 2017, the band were set to perform at Electric Gardens and Mona Foma.

In a statement released on Facebook, the group said, "Due to unforeseen circumstances, beyond the control of the band and the local presenters Mona Foma and Electric Gardens, Underworld have regrettably had to withdraw from their Australia/New Zealand tour in January 2019.

"We are sorry to disappoint those of you looking forward to seeing us and wish our friends at Electric Garden and Mona Foma the very best of luck with their festivals.

Both festivals have confirmed the cancellation in statements on Facebook.

Electric Gardens shared, "We are sorry to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, Underworld will no longer be playing this year's Electric Gardens events."

Mona Foma said it was "devo" and the team was "working hard to find a new artist to join the festival".

Electric Gardens have confirmed to The Music that Paul van Dyk has been added to the bill in Adelaide. Sigma will now close proceedings in Sydney and Perth and Erik Morillo will headline in Melbourne.

The Melbourne venue has also changed to Alumbra Shed 9 with the Adelaide event moving to Thebarton Theatre.

The Music has reached out to Mona Foma for further comment.
