The long-awaited follow-up to Danny Boyle's cult flick will hit cinemas next year

Sony Pictures has announced the first concrete release details for the eagerly awaited sequel to cult-favourite 1996 film Trainspotting as filming begins in the United Kingdom.

Thanks to a short teaser trailer on YouTube, it's been confirmed that not only have core foursome Ewan McGregorEwen BremnerJonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle reunited for Trainspotting 2, but that it will see release from 27 January next year.

Oddly, although the teaser asserts that shooting on the film began only on 16 May, an interview with director Danny Boyle back in March suggests things have been rolling behind the camera for at least a couple of months now.

Regardless of whether they've just kicked off or are a little ways into production, the existence of this movie is something of a small miracle given the much-publicised fallout between McGregor — the star of Boyle's first three films — and the director after Leonardo DiCaprio was cast in the title role of The Beach. With hatchets buried and work under way, though, it's now officially less than a year until we catch up with Begbie, Sick Boy, Renton and Spud one more time. Start getting excited.
