Ahead of a global festival run, Toni Fitzgerald’s Cult Following by local writer-director Felicity Pickering will preview at home at Sydney’s Golden Age Cinema on 1 May.
The indie short, shot in Annandale, featuring three local comics – Paige Hally, Jack Gow and Julia Rorke – follows Rorke as the titular Fitzgerald, a struggling stand-up who finds her audience in a sheltered cult with a strict no TV policy.
Fitzgerald pulls bits from across comedy and pop culture history – from Arrested Development to Jerry Seinfeld – to entertain the cult congregation.
Featuring a guest appearance from filmmaker and UTS lecturer Greg Ferris as Master Ra, the flick unpicks a toxic competitive culture, particularly among young women, all while delighting in the absurdity of 21st century cults.
Toni Fitzgerald’s Cult Following was produced by Pickering, Barbara Ings, Josh Zammit and Harry Reid, with production and costume design by John Scarpias, and Chalotorn Borriraj as DOP.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Pickering, hosted by The Music’s Arts Editor, Hannah Story.
