A New York EDM festival has cancelled its final day, which was to featuring Aussie artist Tommy Trash, after the deaths of two punters – and the illness of many others – were linked to drugs.

The Electric Zoo Festival was taking place on New York's Randall's Island but tragedy struck as two deaths occurred during the Friday and Saturday performances.

A 20-year-old female Olivia Rotondo and a 23-year-old male Jeffrey Russ were identified by police as the deceased, according to Associated Press.

After consultation with the city officials the festival released a statement, cancelling the third and final day.

“The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today.”

A statement from the city confirmed, “The Electric Zoo organizers have worked with city officials to reduce health risks at this event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course is to cancel the remaining day of the event.”

Perth-via London Pendulum spin-off Knife Party had played on the Friday, while Aussie Tommy Trash was set to join Diplo, Armin Van Buuren and Sebastian Ingrosso and many others on the Sunday. Avicci, David Guetta and Tiesto had already played during the festival as well.

As refunds for punters are being organised, police said the deaths appear to be drug-related, with MDMA and ecstasy the most likely causes.
