Tim Minchin And Hannah Gadsby Win At 2019 Helpmann Awards

The ceremony took place in Sydney last night.

Aussie favourites Tim Minchin and Hannah Gadsby both picked up wins at the 2019 Helpmann Awards last night. 

The event, which took place at Sydney's State Theatre, saw Minchin win the Best Australian Contemporary Concert category with his recent tour, Back, who beat Paul Kelly, Kylie Minogue and the RPM vs Bad Apples tour.

Accepting the award via video, Minchin said, "I'd like to thank all the audiences who came to see our concert. I'm an incredibly lucky man". Watch the full speech below. 


Meanwhile. Gadsby won Best Comedy Performer with her new show Douglas, which the Tasmanian comic will tour around Australia later this year.

Mona Foma 2019 was named Best Contemporary Music Festival  (following Dark Mofo's win at the Helpmann industry-only event this past weekend) and Talking Heads founder David Byrne took out the Best International Contemporary Concert award on the back of his 2018 tour of the country

Byrne won the award against some tough competition including Celine Dion, The Killers and Christine & The Queens.

Elsewhere, the critically-acclaimed Harry Potter &The Cursed Child theatre production managed to only win one award (Best Lighting Design - Neil Austin) despite being nominated in eight categories.
