Tasmania's Dark Mofo picked up a big win at the Helpmann Awards' industry-only event on Sunday night.

The midwinter spectacle's 2018 festival took out the Best Special Event category, while it is also nominated for Best Contemporary Music Festival alongside Vivid LIVE 2018, WOMADelaide 2019 and CMC Rocks 2019, which will be revealed at Act II of the Helpmann Awards at Sydney's State Theatre tonight.

Australian legends Paul Kelly and Kylie Minogue have also been nominated for Best Australian Contemporary Concert and Kate Miller-Heidke's Twelfth Night is up for Best Original Score.

Dark Mofo's win comes just a week after the team behind the festival launched new venue, Altar, in Hobart.

The 2019 Helpmann Awards will be broadcast live on ABC Comedy from 8pm tonight.
