Hobart has picked itself up a new live music venue thanks to Mona subsidiary DarkLab (the team behind Dark Mofo) and property developers Riverlee.
The venue, called Altar, is located on the ground floor of the former Tattersall’s Hotel on Murray Street and is operated, programmed, and promoted by DarkLab.
The building was home to many different businesses since it was constructed in the mid-1800s but closed in 2016 due to building faults. It was purchased by Riverlee in 2017 and now the ground floor has been renovated to create Altar.
"We have a vision for this site to become a significant cultural facility in the heart of Hobart," shares DarkLab director Leigh Carmichael.
"We hope it inspires a reinvigorated CBD, and that other businesses can also capitalise. There is momentum building in Hobart at present, and this project has the potential to be a game-changer for the city centre."
Altar has a 400-person capacity and throughout its launch at this year's Dark Mofo it hosted performances from Briggs, Kelsey Lu, Kira Puru, Sarah Mary Chadwick and more. Shows from Seeker Lover Keeper, Ali Barter, Hard-Ons, Psycroptic and more are scheduled throughout the rest of the year.

The venue will operate on weekends as part of Riverlee and DarkLab's larger In The Hanging Garden project.
