The Weeknd’s 'Blinding Lights' has officially surpassed Ed Sheeran’s 'Shape of You' to become the most-streamed Spotify song of all time.

More The Weeknd More The Weeknd

It's become apparent that over the Christmas period, The Weeknd's hit Blinding Lights has overtaken Ed Sheeran's Shape Of You, becoming the current most streamed song on Spotify.

The new data recently came to light after a popular social page, Chart Data, posted noting the change of leadership. At the time of writing, Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You (2017) had 3,332,970,120 Spotify streams to its credit – now slightly beneath Blinding Lights (2019) and the 3,334,180,640 streams that it’s racked up on the audio-entertainment platform.

The Weeknd took to Twitter to celebrate the song's success, writing: "happy new years to blinding lights. the most streamed song of all time tonight @Spotify,”

Ed Sheeran has yet to comment on the new development.

This is far from the first award that Blinding Lights had achieved. Just last year, it was crowned the new #1 song on Billboard’s Greatest Songs Of All Time Hot 100 Chart.

After spending 90 weeks on the Hot 100 Chart, the Canadian singer dethrones Chubby Checker, who was awarded the honour in 1960 with The Twist.

More recently, The Weeknd has been in the news for his new song, Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength), which will soundtrack the new Avatar movie, The Way Of Water.

Originally sharing a teaser on social media of the song, Jon Landau, producer of the original movie and upcoming sequel, shared the post and welcomed The Weeknd to the Disney/Avatar family.

A Disney representative has told Entertainment Weekly that The Weeknd's song will play during The Way Of Water's end credits.
