The Temper Trap ProfileThe Temper Trap are behind one of Australia’s most loved anthems, Sweet Disposition. And Harry Styles – previously solely known as a member of One Direction – released an anthem of his own when he dropped Sign of the Times, his debut single as a solo artist, in 2017.
So, what happens when The Temper Trap cover Harry Styles? Something beautiful. This morning, triple j shared its latest Like A Version, with the Aussie outfit taking on Sign of the Times.
Opening with singer and guitarist Dougy Mandagi on acoustic guitar and highlighting his gorgeous falsetto, his bandmates launched into a full-band rendition after the first chorus.
Staying true to Styles’ original version, The Temper Trap’s offering is still something new and emotionally resonant, unfolding in the vein of classic rock songs.
Explaining what went behind their Like a Version, Mandagi said that he was “taken aback” by Sign of the Times when he first heard it, describing it as a “really good song.”
Drummer Toby Dundas added that when he first heard Sign of the Times, it was clear that Styles had been listening to “a lot of classic songwriting,” with elements of David Bowie and Queen in the song, alongside his own personality.
In addition to covering Harry Styles and discussing the song choice with triple j, The Temper Trap performed their song, Giving Up Air, from their recently released album, Sungazer. Check out all three videos below.
Recently, The Temper Trap have been opening shows for Muse in North America. Plus, they showcased their new record – their first in ten years – on tour across Australia.
Opening up about their energetic new album, The Temper Trap said, “With time apart and much personal growth from us all, Sungazer feels like it’s captured the most pure collection of music we’ve ever made.
“We had more fun making this record and in the writing room than on any of the previous records we’ve done. We’re in a great place creatively, and in our friendships, we’re closer than ever. Being back in the studio together really felt like coming home.”
