Anything Taika Waititi touches seems to turn to gold, so the prospect of the New Zealand filmmaker developing a Star Wars film is very exciting news, especially given the recent controversial conclusion to the Skywalker saga.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi has been approached to develop a new film for the franchise, which isn’t surprising following his Oscar nomination for Jojo Rabbit.
Disney and Lucasfilm are yet to comment on the speculation and it’s not clear whether or not Waititi would be working alongside his Thor: Ragnarok collaborator Kevin Feige, who has previously been confirmed as developing his own Star Wars film.
The news arrives only weeks after The Mandalorian’s season one finale aired via Disney+, an episode that was directed by Waititi and saw him garner a wealth of praise from fans.
The only issue that might arise is timing, with Waititi slated to oversee Thor: Love And Thunder, which begins production in Australia later this year.
