In an Australian nightlife first, Sydney nightclub Carousel was recognised this week by nightlife organisation Nightlife International as one of the top 100 clubs in the world.

Only a year after Carousel first opened its doors, the nightclub ranked 87th alongside Hi Ibiza, which took first place, Pacha Ibiza, at 11th, the prestigious Berlin club Berghain, at 51st, and Sheller Amsterdam, at 100th.

On the recognition of Carousel by Nightlife International, owner and director of the nightclub Kerry Wallace said: “We’re stoked to be the first Australian club in history to make the top 100 rankings,”

“Sydney genuinely feels like it is entering a new era of nightlife. We’re proud to be playing a role in putting Sydney back on the map as a destination where there is not only an actual clubbing scene but an award-winning venue that rivals nightlife meccas like Fabric, Berghain and Pacha,”

“The various bodies who are assisting venues with issues, including the Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner, Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), in addition to the new Vibrancy Reforms, will hopefully see the entire CBD become a thriving Special Entertainment Precinct, protected from petty noise complaints.”

More than 50,000 eager punters have spent nights soaking up the essence of Carousel since opening, quickly becoming a staple stop for touring local and international DJs. Over the last year, many dance music heavy hitters like Raresh, DJ Masda, Booka Shade, Youandewan, Vintage Culture, Dan Shake and Patrick Holland, as well as homegrown favourites like Troye Sivan, Memphis LK, Tangela, and Barney Kato have shaken up the Carousel dancefloor.

Carousel’s authentic, safe, and modern approach to the clubbing experience ultimately led to its recognition as one of the top nightclubs worldwide. A culture of limited phones on the dancefloor ensures that every experience is rooted in living in the moment. With affordable drinks and cocktails, a Funktion One sound system, and a halt in operations only once the sun starts to rise, it’s no wonder Carousel sits among some of the world’s strongest names in clubbing and nightlife.

For Night Time Industries Association CEO Mick Gibb, Carousel is only the beginning of a journey to making Australia a notable nightlife destination.

"Carousel's inclusion in the Top 100 Clubs list is a reflection of the enormous amount of work they have put into creating a world-class venue,” he said.

“They are helping put Australia's night time economy on the global stage, it's vital their contributions are recognised and their cultural significance protected and cherished."

As Sydney re-emerges into a true nightlife hub amongst the city’s long-held reputation of licensing and noise policing, Carousel’s inclusion in Nightlife International’s top 100 clubs in the world is a step forward for the future of Australian nightlife.
