A new nightlife and creative sector advisory panel has been formed in Sydney in an effort to reinvigorate the city’s nightlife and help boost its live music scene among other things.
15 experts across hospitality, live music, theatre, festivals, retail, business and more have been selected for the City of Sydney initiative, which will see a panel offer up advice on new projects and opportunities, potential issues and more in relation to Sydney’s nightlife.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the state’s lockout laws “put the brakes on Sydney’s nightlife”.
“They were a sledgehammer blow when what we needed was an evidence-based approach to the problems we share with other global cities,” he said.
Some panel members include Sydney Fringe Festival festival director and CEO and venue operator Kerri Glasscock, Music NSW managing director Emily Collins and Australasian Performing Rights Association advisor, club owner and DJ John Ferris.
“These experts will advise us on how we can engage with and bring together the creative, cultural, nightlife, private and government sectors to boost our night-time culture, support businesses operating in the night-time economy and help us realise our vision for Sydney as a world-class 24-hour city," Moore added.
The panel – which was selected from 126 applicants – follows a similar model to those in Amsterdam, Berlin, London and New York and will meet four times a year with a City of Sydney Councillor in attendance.
