“Music, like radio, can provide great comfort in uncertain times."

One of the country’s largest commercial radio broadcasters has responded to calls from the Australian music industry to play more local artists amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Southern Cross Austereo, who owns more than 86 radio stations across the country, including Triple M and Hit Networks, told The Music they would be continuing to work with the local industry to promote Australian talent through tough times.

“We are, and have always been passionate about supporting Australian music, from airplay to live events that showcase artists to our audiences,” SCA said.

“On both the Triple M and Hit Networks, we have weekly shows that are dedicated to Aussie music and, during this difficult time we will continue to work with artists, labels and promoters to increase airplay and support the Aussie music industry in a meaningful way.

“Music, like radio, can provide great comfort in uncertain times and we are all in this together.”

SCA’s statement arrives after APRA AMCOS called on broadcasters to play more local music in response to efforts from artists such as Kira Puru, Nicole Millar, L-FRESH The LION and more.

“Radio airplay is an important revenue source for many of our members and a vital way for their music to be heard,” APRA AMCOS Chief Executive Dean Ormston told The Music.

“Increased playlisting on music streaming services and inclusion in commercial and community radio programming is critical during this tumultuous time and will directly support Australian music creators RIGHT NOW!”

BATZ singer Christina Aubry has also recently launched a change.org petition urging triple j, Triple M, Kiis FM and Nova FM to play more Australian acts.
