In a shock to the music world, Sinéad O’Connor passed away last July at the age of 56.

The Nothing Compares 2 U singer was found dead in her London flat, with Metropolitan Police ruling her passing as non-suspicious and confirming that a coroner would conduct an autopsy.

In January, the Southwark Coroner’s Court in London found that O’Connor passed away from natural causes. Now, the exact cause of her death has been revealed.

O’Connor’s death certificate – registered by her ex-husband, John Reynolds – states that she died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, the Irish Independent reports.

The death certificate also stated that she was suffering from a “low-grade lower respiratory tract infection,” with her passing ruled as the “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low-grade lower respiratory tract infection.”

Her passing was certified by Julian Morris, the Inner South London Senior Coroner, and was conducted after a post-mortem examination without inquest.

Last week, The National Wax Museum Plus in Dublin removed a wax figure of Sinéad O’Connor after receiving criticism that it didn’t resemble the singer.

Her brother, John O’Connor, described the figure as a “hideous” representation of the singer, telling Irish broadcaster RTE, “When I saw it online yesterday, I was shocked. I thought it looked something between a mannequin and something out of the Thunderbirds.

“I thought Sinéad would have been very fond of looking well, and she certainly did, and if it was supposed to be a representation of her in her early 20s when she did Nothing Compares 2 U, it just looked nothing like her. I thought it was hideous.”

The museum is “committed” to creating a new wax figure that “better reflects Sinéad O’Connor’s true spirit and iconic image.”

Sinéad O’Connor released ten studio albums throughout her musical career, with her final record, I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss, released in August 2014.

While she undoubtedly influenced people in music who didn’t fit in and inspired fans looking for a different kind of protest singer, O’Connor was also a controversial figure due to her strong beliefs and willingness to act on them in public spaces.

After her passing, singer Tori Amos wrote that O’Connor was “A brilliant songwriter & performer whose talent we will not see the like of again. Such passion, such intense presence & a beautiful soul, who battled her own personal demons courageously.”
