Set Faces To Stun: 2016 Sci-Fi Film Festival Line-Up Announced

Sci-Fi fans should beam down to The Ritz Cinema, Randwick next month for four days of back to back on-screen futurism. The 2016 program for Australia’s only Sci-Fi Film Festival has been announced, with a mix of blockbuster Hollywood franchises, low-budget shorts and talks by top-shelf industry creatives on offer, 19 — 23 Oct.

Topping the bill are two Australian premieres, one of which is an Australian exclusive. Receiving it’s only screening Down Under, The Purge: Election Year is the third instalment of the dystopian saga which envisions a world where any and all acts of violence are legalised for one night every year. The latest film, in strangely prophetic fashion, focuses on a hugely disliked American Presidential candidate who becomes the focus of the annual bloodbath. Where do these Hollywood types get their ideas from?

The star-studded Equals, featuring Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury World, X-Men Apocalypse) and Kristen Stewart (Twilight) receives its Australian premiere on the first night of the festival.

For the Love of Spock is a must-see for any devoted Trekkies. This candid, all-access documentary is a touching tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy – who played the Vulcan bestie of Captain Kirk for more than 50 years – shot by his son, Adam.

In addition to film screenings, there will also be a heap of awesome talks by top sci-fi film creatives, including illustrator and storyboard artist Tani Kunitake (Star Wars: Episode VIII, The Matrix) as well as preview rough-cuts of Australian sci-fi flicks currently in development, at AFTRS in Moore Park.

2016 Sci-Fi Film Festival passes and single tickets available now.
