ALBUM OF THE WEEK: San Cisco Take Us Track-by-track Through Their New Album 'Between You & Me'

It's finally time - San Cisco's new album is here! 

Between You & Me is San Cisco's fourth studio album from the Western Australian group and is "an album that pays tribute to the ends of both love affairs and friendships posed through a lens of nostalgia and young love".

San Cisco’s Scarlett Stevens told The Music recently that the album is about “is about being away from the one you love for the first time."

“It's magic when you're together, but who knows how it will be when you're in different time zones living very different lives,” she said.

Skin
Skin is about being left by a partner that was meant to be “forever”. Being frustrated with the fact you have no control of the situation and living at the mercy of your soon-to-not-be lover's decisions. You still see a small glimmer of hope but ultimately, it's over. This song has been through so many different stages that we might release the making of Skin one day. It could be a whole record in itself.

On The Line
Where do you draw the line? When do you pull the plug? How do you know if the juice is worth the squeeze? Do you pick up the pieces and move onto something new? Or stick it out for another round of romance? The game of love is never an easy one to play.

Reasons
This song is about letting the person you love know that you feel their pain and it is OK to be vulnerable. We make mistakes all the time but we can heal these fractures in our relationships with communication and trust. The sentiment is not about dismissing the pain but more about sharing it.

Messages
Messages is a tongue-in-cheek bop about shitty friends. Originally the lyrics where loosely inspired by my frustration with Scarlett [Stevens, drums/vocals] never replying to my messages, but when we decided the track would be much better with her singing vocals instead, she added in a few of her annoyances about me. It turned into quite a constructive process for our friendship! She still never replies to messages...

Alone
Alone is about long-distance loving. Does distance make the heart grow fonder or frustrated? You never really know until you are back in your lover’s arms. While writing this record Josh [Biondillo, guitar/vocals] and I spent a lot of time playing the songs on acoustic guitars in our living room, this one would be one of my favourites from those writing sessions. We then brought it into the studio where Scarlett and Steven Schram who helped us fish it out and turn it into the song it is today.

When I Dream
I wrote the bones of When I Dream in an empty room on Josh’s Wurlitzer while reflecting on some very personal recent changes in my life. We quickly sketched out the rest of the song and it sat patiently on a hard drive for 12 months before we finished it and released it into the wild.

Gone
Gone was originally a very stripped back acoustic song. We used the same vocal take and structure from the demo and built the rest of the song up around it. The song isn’t about me. I wrote it with someone in mind as if it was a song they would write about their situation.

Flaws
I wrote this song shortly after my first break-up. I was reflecting on my personal issues and had decided I needed time to work through them on my own.

Tell Me When You Leave Tonight
My girlfriend and I were having a conversation about our plans for the evening when Josh overheard me asking her to let me know when she leaves the event she was going to and started singing a hook, which is now the chorus. I then wrote the verses, reflecting on the early stages of our relationship.

Between You & Me
The huge learning curve that your first real love is - the love, hate and everything else that will always exist between you and me.
