ProtomartyrAmerican post-punk outfit Protomartyr are returning to Australia this June, today announcing some new tour dates.
The rockers are already booked to perform at Brisbane’s block party music festival, Against The Grain, and Hobart’s annual mid-winter arts and culture festival, Dark Mofo, this June. Today, they’ve announced intimate headline performances at Sydney’s Mary’s Underground on Thursday, 18 June, and Melbourne’s The Night Cat on Friday, 19 June.
Tickets to the newly announced shows will be available on Thursday, 16 April, at 11 am local time. Head to the links below to secure your tickets.
Protomartyr’s most recent album, Formal Growth in the Desert, was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, with producer Jake Aron and released in 2023. “The desert is more of a metaphor or symbol,” singer Joe Casey explained, “of emotional deserts, or a place or time that seems to lack life.”
The “growth” detailed on the band’s sixth album stemmed from a period of major transition for Casey, including the passing of his mother and his engagement. The great theme of the album? An embrace and acknowledgement of the need to “get on with life.”
In Sydney, Protomartyr will be accompanied by garage-meets-power-pop supergroup, Antenna, which comprises members of Royal Headache and Neighbours, as well as Bennetts Grove. In Melbourne, the band hosts buzz act Npcede, Adelaide post-punk outfit Twine, and Brisbane group Craning.

Protomartyr last toured Australia in 2018, when they made their debut Down Under. Reviewing their first-ever Sydney show – at the Oxford Art Factory – The Music’s Chris Familton declared, “For those that like their post-punk laced with danceability, wit and wisdom this was an impeccable example of just that.”
