Joel Zimmerman, also known as the masked DJ Deadmau5, has apologised for a reported drunken Coachella set where he was slurring his words and was escorted from the stage before the set finished.

Deadmau5 performed at the Californian festival on Friday (18 April) as his alter ego, Test Pilot, and wrote on social media on Saturday that he didn’t “remember a thing.” The performance took place just one day after the DJ revealed he’d be attempting to quit smoking cold turkey, not even utilising tobacco-free nicotine pouches or vapes.

“I don’t remember a thing,” the producer wrote alongside a photo of a bottle of water following the Coachella performance. “But I don't think I had a cig? So... that's good, I guess? Going back to bed. Wake me up around Thursday ish.”

In the comments, he added, “Probably my last Coachella show.”

The weekend two performance was a back-to-back show from Deadmau5 and his collaborator, Zhu, on the dance music-focused stage, Quasar. The stage also featured back-to-back sets from Kaskade and Idris Elba, as well as Alesso and Gorgon City. He ended up stumbling off the stage after what appeared to be one too many drinks.

On Sunday (20 April), Deadmau5 followed up the post with an apology to fans, along with a picture of his cat.

“Man, even my cat is disappointed in me. Tho, it could be argued that she always has been. Sorry about last night. Lol,” he wrote. “TO BE FAIR, I felt the first 3/4 was great!

“Huge shout out to @zhu for introducing me to whisky and carrying my dumb ass till the bitter end. Lemme quit smoking, do some fucken personal resetting here at home, find my spirit animal, work on some new music, and come back better.”
