"It's f*cking insanity," say Private Function. "There's a six minute electronic song & a sea shanty.”

They’re arguably one of the most enigmatic wildcards of a band in the Australian music scene, and now Private Function are gearing up to both dazzle and confound once more as they announce their fourth album, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Announcing the news on Sunday, April 13th, the record officially arrives on May 23rd, with pre-orders for the album going live on April 23rd. Currently, the group are keeping all the pertinent details under wraps, though they’ve let slip just a handful of bits of info about what to expect, noting that the first single will be arriving in a matter of days.
"It's fucking insanity," the group wrote on their Instagram stories. "There's a six minute electronic song & a sea shanty.”
The insanity appears to continue onto the album artwork, which was designed by Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Bootleg Comics and features a 45×45 grid of square images. (For those playing at home, that’s 2025 images.)
Fittingly, the album’s title is also emblematic of the group’s approach to their music, with the unpronounceable symbol often called a ‘shruggie’ in online discourse, with the emoticon used to convey a shrug. Presumably, more info will follow in the coming days, but given the band still refer to their third album (370HSSV 0773H) by a series of letters and numbers as opposed to its ‘official’ title of ‘Hello Asshole,’ the chances are likely very slim.
Fans of the band have already received a preview of the new record, with Private Function playing through the album at a headline gig at Melbourne’s Brunswick Ballroom back in August. However, the lid has been officially kept on the studio versions of the album until now.

The album follows on from a wild few years for Private Function. Having made global headlines after selling the world’s first urine-filled vinyl back in 2023, the band have played some of the biggest shows of their career since, including an opening slot on Green Day’s recent stadium tour of the country. ‘PF Still On Top,’ indeed.
Private Function’s ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ will be available for pre-order on April 23rd.
