It’s been 25 years since Nikki Webster stole hearts across the globe when she performed Under The Southern Skies at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games opening ceremony.
To commemorate the anniversary, she returned to Accor Stadium this week with her children, Skylah and Malakai, where the trio recreated that iconic moment.
Sharing vocal duties with her children, who might just be on their way to becoming stars in their own right, the performance took place to celebrate the inaugural Stadium Australia Hall of Fame.
Inductees included Olympians and Paralympians Cathy Freeman, Louise Sauvage, Tim Sullivan, and Ian Thorpe, Rugby League and Rugby Union players Andrew Johns, Brad Fittler, John Eales, and Jonny Wilkinson, and Socceroos heroes John Aloisi and Mark Schwarzer.
The evening made for the perfect moment to recreate Nikki Webster’s iconic performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and sharing the milestone with her children made for an even sweeter event. You can watch footage of the performance below.

Describing the Stadium Australia Hall of Fame event last night (15 September) as the “most magical night,” Webster wrote on social media, “25 years after my life changed forever, stepping back into Accor Stadium was beyond special. I am forever grateful to everyone who gave me the opportunity to be the Hero Girl.”
She added, “Tonight was truly emotional – watching my baby girl shine so brightly in the middle of the stadium all on her own, then sharing the stage with my boy and experiencing it all together as a family. A full-circle moment I will never forget. Thank you @accorstadium.”
Nikki, Skylah and Malakai appeared on Sunrise this morning to further discuss the inspiring moment – you can watch that interview below.
In 2023, Matilda’s Vice Captain Steph Catley revealed her all-time favourite hype song before the games: Strawberry Kisses by Nikki Webster.
“It’s a banger of a song,” Catley said. “It’s iconic. I had it as a CD in my Walkman. It was a single, and I just listened to it over and over again, so it reminds me of my childhood. It’s happiness in a song, and it just gets me going on my day. Do you not like Strawberry Kisses? Well, I don’t like you.”
Strawberry Kisses debuted at #2 upon its June 2001 release and stayed in that spot for seven non-continuous weeks on the ARIA Singles Chart.
