Iconic British musician, activist and author Morrissey has announced a series of Australian shows this October as part of a just-unveiled World Tour.

As Pitchfork notes, the ex-frontman of The Smiths broke the news via renowned fan-site and de facto official Moz communications channel True To You, where it was confirmed that he has lined up five shows Down Under for the local leg of his extensive upcoming tour.

He'll kick off at Melbourne's Festival Hall on Saturday 22 October, heading on to perform in Adelaide (Thebarton Theatre, 26 October), Canberra (Royal Theatre, 28 October), Wollongong (WIN Centre, 29 October) and Newcastle, where he wraps up the sojourn at the Civic Theatre on Monday 31 October.

Morrissey was most recently in Australia mid-last year, when he visited as part of Sydney's Vivid LIVE program (and we got to see it!), and later drew the attention of the Australian government after calling out the "idiocy" of its plan to cull 2 million feral cats.

In late 2014, there were indications he was looking to retire from touring altogether following several health issues, including multiple treatments for cancer; that year's World Peace Is None Of Your Business remains his most recent output.

His wider world tour, which starts with a headline spot at Chicago's Riot Fest in September, includes shows in the US, Japan, China, Indonesia and Singapore.

Ticket details are yet to be announced for the impending shows. Stay tuned for further information.
