Duo absconded to Chicago to mix 'What They Say' with Kanye West producer

Sydney hip-hop duo Mind Over Matter have been kept well busy of late. With preparations for the release of their forthcoming LP This Way To Elsewhere in full swing, MCs Willow (Rowan Lockyer) and Smiles Again (Martin Brown) have nonetheless found the time to take a little detour old Chicago way to mix their current single, the Bliss N Eso-featuring What They Say.

To mix the single, Mind Over Matter flew to the States to brave sub-zero temperatures and enlisted the help of producer Craig Bauer (Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West) to achieve a sound with which they could leave happy.

“When we set out to make this album, we wanted the most universal sound we could achieve. We're stoked with what we cooked up,” Smiles Again said of the trip.

Not a bad trajectory for a relatively young band, having only come into being in 2006. And although This Way To Elsewhere will be the band's third LP - the other two being 2008's Keepin' It Breezy and Just Like Fireworks (2011) - they are reaching a level of maturity that arguably obscures that fact.

While much of the album was produced at home with the help of personalities such as Matik (Seth Sentry, Pez, Bliss N Eso) and multi-instrumentalist Jon Reichardt - utilising locations such as a Salamander Bay beach house and Smiles Again's Sydney studio - their reaching out to Bauer is further indication of their growth as songwriters and musicians as well as their ascent within the Australian hip-hop scene.

This Way To Elsewhere is out May 30 via I Forget, Sorry!/Shock Records.
