“A good man, gone too soon."
A Sydney memorial service will take place for Ya Ya Choral and Scattered Order frontman Patrick Gibson next week, following his death on the weekend.
The influential Australian musician passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer, with longtime friend Phil Turnbull of Sydney post punk outfit Voigt/465 stating “his long and debilitating illness might have stuffed up his physical body but it never dampened his intelligence or his love for music”.
Gibson was a formidable force in Australia’s underground scene throughout the ‘80s, performing with the likes of The Systematics, Moral Fibro, No Night Sweats and Famous while also being heavily involved with M Squared Records.
Over the years, his focus shifted to radio, with Gibson appearing as a regular on ABC, and in recent years he formed On The Area Steps.
‘80s Newcastle post punk band Pel Mel have also paid tribute to Gibson, calling him “a creative dynamo”.
“Pel Mel and associated M Squared micro-bands had the honour and pleasure of sharing many gigs, laughs and beers with Patrick over the years,” they said.
