A new basement bar below Clocks at Flinders Street Station has just opened, offering a “first of its kind” vibe of cocktails and live jazz music.
Miss Gunn’s officially opened on Valentine’s Day. With opening hours of 4 pm until 11 pm on Thursdays and 4 pm until 1 am on Friday and Saturdays, the venue has an aura of exclusivity – if you find it, you won’t want to leave.
The new venue is nestled within the "rediscovered" basement of Flinders Street Station. It honours Ada May Gunn (nicknamed Miss Gunn), who reportedly opened a space called the Loungers’ Club in 1909.
Miss Gunn’s is inspired by the former ladies’ club – a space where busy women could stop and read over an afternoon tea before heading to the bustling city.
The space combines an old-school urban lounge, including the original bluestone and brickwork, with modern cocktails, food, and music. The venue’s synopsis reads:
Miss Gunn’s isn’t just a bar; it’s a junction between Melbourne’s past and present, a place where history and imagination collide in the most delightful way. For those who stumble upon it, it feels less like a discovery and more like an invitation—an invitation to step back in time and toast to the woman who continues to captivate the City she once called home.
In a statement to Time Out, Anthony Simioni, Chief Operating Officer of the Doxa Community Club, which operates Clocks and Miss Gunn’s, said: “As you enter, you are surrounded by the original foundations of the 1909 Flinders Street build. The space tells the story of Miss Gunn, transporting you back in time with exposed bluestone and bricks from the original structure.
