MadonnaMadonna's daughter, Lourdes Leon has released her debut single, Lock and Key under the name Lolahol.
The 25-year-old's first work under the moniker sees her establish a sound distinctly different to her famous mother, serving up a seductive club banger.
Co-produced by Eartheater, Lock and Key arrived accompanied by an Eartheater-directed, self-choreographed music video that serves as both a dance video and a fly-on-the-wall look at Lolahol's home in New York City.
Our first official look at Lolahol as an artist follows Leon's work as a music video choreographer and dancer and serves as further evidence of her desire to establish her own identity in the creative world. Speaking to Interview Magazine earlier this year, Leon explained that she doesn't have a specific career goal, but rather would like to explore as many creative avenues as she can, stating "I want to figure out who the f–k I am before I let anyone else try to tell me who I am, you know?”
That desire to carve out an identity can be seen in her dancing and modelling work, activities in which Leon believes her unique sense of style can shine.
“I dance, I have a very specific sense of style, and I’m interested in aesthetics, so I like to incorporate all those parts of myself into my projects… I want to create a world in which models have more agency over what they’re doing, and they’re not just silent clothing racks. That’s the age that we’re coming into in the fashion world: models as personalities and artists."
The release of Lock & Key may come as a surprise to those who read that expansive interview, as Leon indicated that music was something that at that time she wasn't all that driven to pursue. "Honestly, actors really annoy me and I can’t be around them. As for music, I can sing. I just don’t care about it. Maybe it’s too close to home."
The arrival of Lolahol into the musical world comes at a time when her mother is directing her own biopic, preventing "misogynistic men" from mistelling her story.
in a recent interview with entertainment publication Variety. Asked directly why she chose to direct the biopic, Madonna responded "I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film. It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. So I put my foot in the door and said, “No one’s going to tell my story, but me.”
