"We understand the passion the community has for the Thebarton Theatre."

The discussion surrounding the future of South Australia's Thebarton Theatre continues, with both artist Billy Bragg and state Premier Steven Marshall weighing in today.

News emerged on Monday that the much-loved theatre was under threat of demolition to make way for a new road upgrade.

Marshall has today shared a post via Facebook saying that "It's clear people are passionate about the Thebarton Theatre. So are we."

"We value the contribution the Thebby makes to the community and it's for this reason we continue to invest in its future. Last month, we invested $500,000 to ensure the Thebby can be fully utilised during the summer months and continues to be a sought-after venue for artists," it reads.

"Now let's address recent media reports suggesting the Thebby will be put in jeopardy as a result of the Torrens to Darlington upgrade. We have already announced that of three options on the table for this generational road upgrade, TWO involve tunnelling."

"Significant consideration is being given to all local and state heritage-listed properties along South Road in developing the business case and through the planning phase.

"We understand the passion the community has for the Thebarton Theatre and they can rest assured that we will extensively consult with key stakeholders and the broader community regarding these upgrade plans." See the full post here.

The comments come just a day after footage has been shared of the Premier sharing his support for the theatre in a video from last year, where he states, "Long May It Continue. It Must Be Protected. It must never be bulldozed...Not only protect it, but grow it." See the post below.

Additionally, UK artist Bragg has thrown his support behind the theatre according to ABC

"Can't believe that the City of Adelaide is planning to knock down the Thebarton Theatre," he shared in a post to Twitter. "I've had some great nights there and hope to play the iconic venue again someday."

Bragg has also encouraged his followers to sign the Change.org petition in support of the theatre, which is now close to 50,000 signatures. See it here.
