Lil Uzi Vert Explains Change Of Pronouns To They/Them

Lil Uzi Vert has spoken out about a deeply personal aspect of their identity, explaining their embracing of gender nonconformity while adopting 'they/them' pronouns.

ICYMI: The rapper real name Symere Bysil Woods, quietly changed their pronouns in their Instagram bio to they/them back in July 2022, with the change later confirmed to Pitchfork by their spokesperson.

Now, in a recent chat with fashion mag 032, Uzi was asked if they initially struggled to make the move in regards to their identity.

"I never hesitated," the Just Wanna Rock rapper admitted.

"But I did take my time to learn as much as I could about this before I was able to proceed. Taking the time to figure out who you are is a big part of what it means to be alive."

"Once you figure out whether you’re here with it, there with it, or both, you’re not alone anymore. This community offers access to a certain kind of support that you might not have had [previously during] your entire life because you weren’t raised that way." 

They added, "I come from a household where it’s not okay to be 'non' anything."

"I’m not brave at all. I just think a good product [is] a good product. Think about fashion. Gay and trans designers are some of the biggest talents out there, and gangster-ass guys wear their stuff without a thought." 

"What you make is what matters, not how you identify."

The hip-hop icon is set to make their way Down Under for this year's Listen Out Festival, which will also see music heavyweights Skrillex, Four Tet, JPEG MAFIA and more hit the stage.
